Free pass to the Results Tri Aquathlon at Canford School 20th June

Hi everyone

I entered the Results Tri Aquathlon a few months ago.  It is a series of two races.  The first was in May which I completed and enjoyed.  It's a great venue, with the outdoor run taking place in the school's grounds which are beautifully landscaped.

Anyway, having injured my knees through a bout of over training, I won't be taking part in the second race on Friday 20th June.  The race starts at 7pm and the distances are 400m swim and a 5k run.

If anyone would like to take my place (no charge), let me know (julie@zoomgb.com) and I'll arrange the transfer with Michelle at Results Fitness.

Happy training,

Julie xx

Zoom Athletes in World Sprint World Champs Vancouver

Just had notification that Jenny Julian came 4th in her age group (25-29) missing a medal by 20 seconds, David Bourne was 16th and Keith Mahon 20th both in the (45-49) age group. In what turned out to be really awful conditions with water temps at 12 degrees and pouring rain all three put in great efforts. Fantastic first age group champs for them all well done, you rock!

Ashley Buckle, Graham Perkins, Dave Crichton, Mike McCarthy, Julie Pike, Tim Fairbrother, Paolo De Luca and myself. We are the moderating team, we check stuff just to make sure its relevant and acceptable to the wider membership to be posted.

Things that would be great to post up are:  race information and results, social activities, any training tips hints, training groups meeting up that you would like to open out to other members. Well done to Andy Downton and Mike McCarthy at the BJW 24 mile Hilly TT last night, they were out showing the usual testers and road boys that triathletes can ride bikes too! Andy is clearly going well on the bike and came second overall with a 1:02, Mike has shown just how much improvement you can make by having a sensible plan and really consistent training with a 1:07, great stuff guys

This week see our club member literally racing all over the world! Good luck and great racing to Jenny Julian, Keith Mahon and David Bourn that are out at the World Champs in Vancouver. Other racing that I know of are: Steve Barratt who is taking on the challenge of the Elites at Blenheim and at the  Weymouth Sprint we have Peter Roscoe and Lawrence Down racing. Do we have anyone racing The Middle distance event at Weymouth or anyone else racing this weekend? If so good luck and great racing J

Also Bike racing at Barnsfield Heath is coming back, this midweek racing is fantastic training, check it out on the following website:

I will be taking my mountain bike and kayak to Boxend Park near Bedford on 26th/27th July for the "Multisport Weekender" which includes off-road and on-road Triathlons as well as a 10k Run race, an Aquathlon and a Quadrathlon (all fairly short).

I did the Quadrathlon last year and the venue and organization is pretty good. If anyone is interested in sharing transport or wants more info, let me know.

Pat wins the Grand Union Canal Race in Record time!!

Conratulations to Pat Robbins for his remarkable run at the Grand Union Canal Race. Not only did he win it but broke the existing course record by some 25 minutes he completed the course in 27 hours and one minute. For those of you that are not familiar with this event its a non stop 145 mile run along the Grand Union Canal between Birmingham and London. What makes it even more remarkable is that this is only Pat's second year running ultra distances. Last year he entered the race more in hope than expectation and confessed to some of his racing colleagues that he had only ever completed one marathon some years earlier and that his longest run in training for the event had been 22 miles. This created a good deal of leg-pulling although this soon turned to admiration as he turned in a superb first performanceto finish 4th overall in a little over 31 hours.

This years event has seen Pat put in some more structured training and he has been regularly running the Tuesday and Thurday sessions as his specific speed work. A wake up call to all Ironman triathletes who think that speed work is only required for sprint and olympic distance!

Pat startted his race really sensibly an covered the first 22 miles in 4hours 11 minutes, at this stage he was over and hour behind the leaders, through the first half of the race this extended and at one point Pat was over 2 hours behind the leading runners. Running through the night along the canal he saw a few interesting sites including 2 men trying to recue a cow that had decided to go for a swim in the canal! That could have been a bizarre dream caused by sleep  deprivation and far too much running! With around 50 miles to go Pat hit a purple patch and was really picking his pace up, fuelled by gels, cashew nuts and other assorted goodies provided by hid Dad in full support crew mode. He passed the second place runner and pushed on, continuing his momentum. After arriving near Paddington and on the vantage point of a bridge he spotted the first place runner around 400m ahead, he quickly caught and passed him, being concerned that both chasers might mount a last attempt to wrestle back the lead Pat pushed on again. Even with 133 miles in his legs at that stage he covered the last 12 miles in an amazing 1 hour 45 minutes.

For those wondering how to run a good marathon there are some great lessons here in running a negative split even when the distance id 145 miles!

Well done Pat on an incredible effort and on setting a fantastic new record for the event.

Zoom Club Races for 2008

Ok here is the list of club points races and Club chapionships this summer

Download Zoom_news_april24.doc

Its your duty to kick some Tri booty this summer :-)

The Cardiff Triple

The Cardiff Triple is a team event (teams of four) held in an enclosed stadium, which means it is an excellent spectator event, really good fun, and ideal for an inter-club race day. It is three very short triathlons in one, the first leg is as follows:

  • 200m swim (in a lovely on-site pool)
  • 5,000m bike (on an outdoor velodrome)
  • 1,000m run (inside the bike track)

There is a 5-minute break after the last competitor finishes and then the second leg starts:

  • Run
  • Bike
  • Swim

Again there is a 5-minute break before the final leg:

  • Rolling bike start (which is great fun)
  • Swim
  • Run

Times are aggregated and the fastest team wins!  There are several "waves" during the day, organised by ability so that each wave is competitive and there is also a junior wave.

This Event is on the same day as the National Relays in Nottingham 2nd August so we have some options around which events we would like to enter teams. Foe the athletes that would like to test themselves at the highest level we can look at putting teams into the National - Please let me know if you would like to enter either event and we can see the level of support.
